when in flatland country. Runway 4 has no VASI aid. It is right traffic for 22 and left traffic for 04, the rarely used runway. This is an uncontrolled field but usually the Unicom frequency of 122.7 is monitored by a gentleman in the rustic tower who also collects the landing fees.
At one time, United Airlines had scheduled service to KAVX using Douglas DC-3s. The Wrigley family, owners of much of the island since 1919, used to house their own DC-3 in the old wooden hangar, still standing, when they were on the island. I saw it there in 1969 on my first Catalina trip. Freight and mail were flown to the island by DC-3s until 2017, now that work is done by Cessna Caravans.
Gary’s C90A has Raisbeck propellers and the STC that allows a maximum ramp weight of 10,560 pounds. Our basic operating weight – airplane, cabinet contents and two crew – is 7,300 pounds. With the typical four, hefty male passenger load of about 1,000 pounds, that leaves us with a maximum fuel load of 2,260 pounds, or about 339 gallons (45 gallons below full tanks). Our typical landing and takeoff weight at Catalina comes out to about 9,600 pounds. Only once in our 58 flights have we had to land to add fuel on the
